He wears no headpiece, or even the usual Fire Lord robes. Zuko makes a sound of agreement in the back of his throat. “I’m not going to disagree with you.” Sokka swallows at a particularly pained-sounding groan and shakes his head, commiserating with no one. Sokka doesn’t know why he’d want to the sight of a screaming, bloody human infant emerging from a gaping vagina is not one that he’d like to see a second time, no matter whose infant or vagina. His eyes are fixed on the door like he’s trying to see through it and into the space beyond. “Why does anyone ever have more than one kid?” Zuko whispers. Even now, just the noise has his knees growing so weak and wobbly that he has to lean against the wall to remain upright. He’s only been so close to one other childbirth that he can remember, little Hope on the way to Ba Sing Se back when the war still raged, and that was more than enough for him. But Zuko wants him here–had asked him specifically to remain by his side in the hallway, as no one was allowed in the actual birthing room but the Fire Lady and the midwives–and so here Sokka will remain, even if every groan and scream of pain has his very bones prickling. If it weren’t for Zuko, Sokka wouldn’t be here there’s quite literally nothing for them to do but wait, listen, and overthink. Zuko, by his side, is green enough that Sokka knows him to be in agreement without even having to say anything. There’s no way that that’s natural, all that noise and pain.

The screaming and the noise coming from the Fire Lady’s designated birthing room is horrible to listen to, and it makes his skin crawl and his stomach swoop. Even as a man, bereft of the organs required to build, sustain, and expel a new life, he’s presently wishing that he were somewhere else in the palace. How ironic, Sokka thinks, that childbirth–that which keeps the world full, which keeps humanity progressing, which is so vital to every living creature on the planet–is so wildly uncomfortable for everyone remotely involved.
